Lebaran Ketupat

Pada hari Raya 1 Syawal, family will cook anything of their favorite such as opor, pindang, semur daging, sambel goreng, etc yang dimakan bersama lontong (rice cake wrapped in banana leaves, or just steamed rice) as the main menu, with wide array of cookies, cakes and aneka  kuih-muih.

The celebration will only last for two days, then some of the muslim will continue to fast for six days.
We call it, puasa syawal or puasa enam. The mini-celebration for people who did fasting in syawal month we call it lebaran kecil aka syawalan aka lebaran ketupat.

At syawal day 7, the local will only start to look for young coconut leaves, wave them to make a diamond-shape container, fill up with rice and boil them for 4-5 hours. Traditionally ketupat will served with coconut-y-curried vegetable.

The most famous gravy is sayur sambel godok kind of curried coyote, tofu, boiled egg, green bean noodle in a thick coconut milk gravy. Well, different place will made a different gravy to enjoy the ketupat.

Some modern people mix it with rendang minang, opor ayam, etc.

HOW ABOUT ME….????

of course we celebrate too :)

Eventhough my puasa enam turn into puasa two which I can only stay for 2 days, and start munching any food again. I made the traditional dish to remember my childhood, and to reconnected with what-so-called-simple-happiness :)

The ketupat made from instant ketupat aka nasi impit,  the gravy is kind of mix and match because I don't know the ingredient can't get proper ingredients.

Day 1: Sayur Godog
1 firm white tofu, sliced into 4. Lightly fried

Easy Chicken Rendang

The "Must Food" for Hari Raya in Malaysia.

Lebaran di KL nggak afdol tanpa rendang ayam dan ketupat nasi.
Yes, Hari Raya is not complete without rendang, lemang, and ketupat. That is how the local celebrate their Hari Raya.

Me and my sucks cooking skills,
I have to find a way to make the Hari Raya still festive-ful  but not makes me hating myself *lol

EASY CHICKEN RENDANG

Hari Raya eve we went for a bit grocery,
yes… just a bit.
Since only two of us, we only make rendang from half chicken.

1/2 chicken, cut into several pieces
1 box coconut milk
1 pack rendang paste (cheating) ,
1 Onion, 2 garlic, bit of ginger => slices nicely
1 lemongrass, bruise several time with the back of knife
1 kefir lime leaves

don't ask me to make rendang paste, Waaaayyyy too many ingredients.
And I never really have confident in cooking Sumatran - Malaysian food.
Well, maybe if we move to the other country  and we couldn't find any Asian store selling rendang paste, I might need to force myself to learn how to make a good rendang seasoning from scratch.

The main hero for the day

I purposely pan fried the chicken before cook to keep the meat in the nice shape.
(I saw many rendang messing up, smashed up and mix together with the seasoning)
Til I don't know which is what.

fried garlic, onion and ginger with 1 table spoon coking oil in small fire until soft.

add in the rendang paste, stir for 5 minutes until the oil separates from the paste.
I always do that to make sure the paste well cook and didn't leave "raw-herbs" taste

add in the pan fried chicken
mix for couple minutes (5-10 min) until you feel the chicken start absorbs the seasoning.

add in coconut milk, lemon grass and kefir lime leaves.
You can add dried coconut (kerisik) to add the texture too, but I found it too rich

stir until the gravy bit dry

Remove the lime leaves and lemon grass

Served with hot rice or rice cake :)

Ramadhan 2015

Ramadhan sebentar lagi….
hihihi…

Excited..?
Of course, Muslim kat dunia mana yang tak excited dengan bulan Ramadhan.
Bulan yang penuh berkah, penuh pahala, penuh (makanan sedap), bazaar Ramadhan,
lauk macam-macam...
perrrhhhhhh….. hahaha…

Puasa tahun-tahun lalu, selalu seorang. Puasa tahun ini ada temannya :)
So, memang feel different begitu.
Kata orang jawa, tambah mantep :)

Setelah sebulan penuh berpuasa, kita boleh celebrate Hari Raya :)

Many people doesn't understand why we Muslim love this month so much.
Why we happily starve ourselves while plenty food around.

regardless with promise of syurga, pahala dan segala mak-neneknya.

Diorang tak akan faham this kind of thing, so here I will explain why I am happily starve myself without touching the religion word (heaven, hell, syurga, pahala-thingy)

1. Fasting taught me to respect food and money (DEEPLY)

Some people think I must be weird caused I able to swallow any kind of food, no pantang-pantang, no picking, no choosing.

When we knew the feeling of hungry and starvation, we will be grateful for any food that exist in the world. The feeling and attitude keep stay on my mind even when we are not in Ramadhan month.

2. Make me feel more emphatic to less-fortunate people

When we can't touch food and drink. Could you may imagine how suffer it is..?
For us, it might only happen one month in a year, for other people hungry and starvation might part of their daily life.

3. Discipline

With fasting, there is a specific time to start and stop eating and drinking, and we force ourselves to follow without fail.
(well, sure you can eat or drink, or do anything as you like without other knowing)
But self discipline is about you and yourself :)

Selamat Berpuasa Kawan-Kawan Semua

Hari Raya Aidil Fitri is one of the most moment, every Muslim in the world look forward.
After the whole month of fasting and tried hard to reduce all the "Uncontrollable WILL"
Fasting taught me how to control myself, not only food but emotionally too.
Was hoping I will lose some weight, but I guess it's not happening.

During Hari Raya we have a road trip along west Malaysia, it was a different experience compared to the usual.

Will share the story very soon....

SELAMAT HARI RAYA.....!!!

Hari Raya Aidil Fitri

Happy Eid Mubarak
Selamat Hari Raya Idul Fitri , 1 Syawal 1434 Hijriyah

Selamat Hari Raya Aidil Fitri everyone..
The end of Ramadhan, we celebrate with morning prayer and some visit to friends and family.
Like other festive seasons, Hari Raya is always full with food too..
Too many cakes, cookies, and other tidbits which keep you munch and eat.
*I really hope the weight loss during Ramadhan is not just come back within a couple days during Hari Raya just because I ate too much.

Rendang, Ketupat, Tea and Homemade Muffin

Had my muffin and milk tea as a breakfast,
I watch my Beef Rendang still bubbling in the slow cooker, took a bit a give a try..
It doesn't taste so good at all.
It's kinda weird and spicy.

Latte and Pizza instead

We couldn't really eat it since it tastes way too weird, ends up with we had a pizza for brunch.
(Thanks to Modesto which willingly open the restaurant during Hari Raya)

Quiche and Emperor Chicken

The only healthy food we had was emperor chicken,
It is a whole chicken, rub and fill with herbs and covered in tin foil
Then steamed for two hours.

Seems like the cooking passion for Hari Raya celebration only last for 1 day.
The next day we just eat out in a very quiet place around the house.

Nemo Fish & Chips

A package arrives..

My Hari Raya Present ;-)

My Hari Raya present arrives from Hong Kong,
But we have to pick it from the main Post Office in Pasar Seni.
Was a hassle visit, but OK

I got my waterproof camera to roam around in the beach..
Fish feeding and take their picture.

Thanks to Papa-San...
I like my present soooooo muuuucchh....

Menu For Hari Raya Aidil Adha

SELAMAT HARI RAYA KURBAN
HAPPY EID UL ADHA

Hari Raya Qurban,
Qurban / kurban = sacrifice

is a celebration where the muslim all over the world, who has extra money to do sacrifice..
they will slaughter 4 legs animal and distributed the meat to the poor.
Not any 4 legs animal ok... but animal we used to eat (Cow, Camel, Lamb, Goat, Buffalo)
No Elephat or Kangaroo slaughtered for hari raya...
And other part of muslims go to Mecca (in bloody saudi) for Haj

I wonder why God have to put the holly city for prayer in Saudi.
Doesn't he understand they already rich from the oil,
why we have to go there and give them lot of money from visa, hotel, food, airlines, souvenir
plenty things..!!!
(don't bother me... I am bad, lol.. complaint about anything)

We are lucky this year Hari Raya is on Friday, means we have long weekend
continue with Friday, Saturday and Sunday no class...
Awesome isn't it...?

From the beginning we do not plan to have some vacation because I am way too tired to do anything.
Add in my body let me caught by fever and I have to sleep for the whole Friday.
So we just stay at home and take everything easy.

But still, we try to cook some kampong dishes to get the Hari Raya atmosphere in the house
in a very simple way

our brunch on Hari Raya Morning

Chicken Rendang

1 Kg fresh cut chicken (got it from wet market) clean it, discharge the excess skin and fat.
5 bird eye chili
1/2 packet coconut milk
Garlic & Onion
2 packet of ready to cook rendang spices  =P
**cook according the packet direction

Fried Tempe
is a must

high protein, low calories,
make you stay young

stir fried tofu with black pepper and oyster sauce

an experimental cooking which tur not bad

stir friend kailan, bean sprout and minced beef

Bihun salad with spicy peanut sauces...

Good Village Food..
Taste?  too blend or way too strong for outsider tongue
Sometimes the ingredient are just too strange  heheheheheh..... I understand that...

if you are new to Indonesian food, I will suggest to have Nasi Padang where most of the way of cooking bit similar with Malaysian curry just bit more spicy.

 easier in our tongue..

 Last...

a fresh cut pineapple from downstairs to cleanse the throat

 and relax..

with bubble tea, dessert and Food channel

GOOD DAY OFF, NO...........?
